Apple is working on a new smart doorbell camera featuring Face ID technology to unlock doors, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The device, currently in early development, could launch by the end of 2025 at the earliest. It is expected to offer advanced facial recognition and seamless integration with smart home locks.
Key Features of the Smart Doorbell
The smart doorbell will use Apple’s Secure Enclave chip to manage Face ID information, ensuring privacy by isolating data from other hardware systems. Similar to Face ID on iPhones, the camera will automatically unlock the door upon recognizing the homeowner or a registered resident.
Apple may collaborate with a smart lock manufacturer to develop a comprehensive lock-and-doorbell system. The device is also expected to support third-party HomeKit-compatible locks. Additionally, it will likely utilize Apple’s forthcoming “Proxima” Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is rumored to feature in future HomePod Mini and Apple TV updates.
Gurman notes that Apple might release the product under its own brand to avoid potential reputational risks related to security concerns, such as break-ins. Alternatively, the company could collaborate with partners like Belkin or Logitech to bring the product to market.
Smart Home Expansion Plans
This doorbell is part of Apple’s broader strategy to expand its smart home offerings. Reports indicate the company is working on:
- A wall-mounted smart home control device with speaker functionality, similar to the Google Nest Hub.
- Updates to the Apple TV and HomePod Mini, expected next year.
- Additional smart home products, including cameras and display devices. One display may magnetically attach to walls or speaker bases, while another could feature a robotic arm design.
Timeline and Expectations
The doorbell camera remains in early development and is not expected to launch until late 2025 at the earliest. However, Apple’s smart home lineup is anticipated to see significant updates in the coming year.
This aligns with Gurman’s earlier reports of Apple’s “aggressive” approach to expanding its smart home presence, highlighting the company’s ambition to redefine home automation through Apple Intelligence.
