The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) at CES 2025 announced that the adoption of Qi2 technology is growing rapidly, with a significant expansion of wireless power applications expected in 2025, particularly in Android devices.
The announcement noted that Qi2, introduced just a year ago, has already reached over 1.5 billion devices globally, offering faster charging, improved efficiency, and enhanced convenience.
Since its launch, over 1,100 Qi2-certified products have been released, reflecting a six-fold increase in adoption compared to the previous Qi version. Manufacturers are responding to the increasing demand for Qi2-enabled products, with many new releases anticipated throughout 2025.
Qi2 Support Expands to Android Devices
Initially rolled out in the fall of 2023, Qi2 was only supported by Apple’s iPhone. However, by late 2024, Android devices began adopting Qi2, and further expansion of Qi2-enabled Android devices is expected throughout 2025.
Both Samsung and Google have announced their commitment to Qi2 adoption. Samsung confirmed that its Galaxy devices will support Qi2 in 2025, while Google is committed to increasing Qi2 integration in Android devices. Additionally, Google is contributing to the development of the upcoming Qi v2.2 standard, which will include high-power wireless charging technology.
New Qi2 Extensions and Innovations
The Qi2 ecosystem continues to expand, with new products such as Qi2 Ready certified devices, including smartphones and accessories like cases. These devices will deliver an enhanced Qi2 experience when paired together.
A key innovation for 2025 includes the introduction of a wireless phone charger with a moving coil, designed for the automotive industry. This technology will address challenges like varying phone sizes, placement, and movement inside vehicles. The moving coil will detect the phone’s position and ensure a secure connection for fast, efficient charging.
Panasonic Automotive Systems (PAS) contributed to the development of this moving coil technology and will continue to support the advancement of in-vehicle wireless charging systems.
Both of these developments are part of the Qi v2.1 update to the Qi2 standard.
WPC’s Vision for the Future
Paul Struhsaker, Executive Director of WPC, expressed his enthusiasm about the widespread adoption of Qi2, stating that the impact of Qi2 and its global adoption is outstanding, and that we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg, with expanded use cases for a broader range of smartphones and other new applications continuing to accelerate Qi2 adoption and deployment.
At CES 2025
Attendees at CES 2025 can visit the Wireless Power Consortium’s booth (#52359) in the Venetian Expo Center, Smart Home section, to see demonstrations of Qi2 products and the Ki Cordless Kitchen.
Speaking about the expansion of Qi2, Fady Mishriki, WPC’s Chair of the Board of Directors, said,
We are excited to have major Android manufacturers commit to delivering the Qi2 experience to their customers. This will not only accelerate the deployment of Qi2 in general but also enhance Qi2 solutions for public infrastructure and automotive interiors.
It will provide companies with the confidence to invest in Qi2 deployment. Customers appreciate the consistent, fast charging experience that a Qi2-certified charger provides, along with the wide range of innovative Qi2 accessories available for purchase.
