Tata Electronics acquires 60% sake in Pegatron’s iPhone manufacturing plant in India

After reports last year, Tata Electronics has confirmed that it has acquired a controlling 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India. This strategic acquisition comes on the heels of Tata Electronics’ takeover of Wistron’s India operations in March 2024, signaling the conglomerate’s aggressive expansion in the electronics manufacturing sector.

Pegatron India, a subsidiary of the Taiwanese electronics giant Pegatron Corporation, is a significant player in the Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) industry. The company caters to a diverse portfolio of global clients, including Apple, and exports its products to major markets across North America, Asia, and Europe.

The acquisition, which recently received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI), will see Pegatron India undergo a rebranding process to align with its new ownership under the Tata umbrella. Despite the changes, the company will continue to provide high-quality electronics manufacturing services to its existing clients.

This latest acquisition significantly strengthens Tata’s presence in the iPhone manufacturing landscape. Tata already operates an iPhone assembly plant in Karnataka, acquired from Wistron last year.

The company is also in the process of constructing another major iPhone assembly facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The Pegatron acquisition marks a strategic move by Tata to enhance its capabilities and capacity within the Apple supply chain.

By integrating Pegatron India’s expertise and established client base, Tata Electronics is poised to become an even more crucial player in the global electronics manufacturing landscape. It also demonstrates India’s increasing importance as a manufacturing hub for electronics, particularly for Apple, which is actively seeking to diversify its supply chain beyond China.

As part of the deal, Tata Electronics and Pegatron will integrate their teams. The rebranding of Pegatron India is expected to take place in the coming months, marking a new chapter for the company under Tata’s ownership and reinforcing Tata’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the electronics manufacturing industry.

Regarding the announcement, Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD of Tata Electronics, said:

The acquisition of a majority stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited fits into Tata Electronics’ strategy of growing our manufacturing footprint.
