Samsung is preparing to launch its first tri-folding smartphone later this year, according to industry sources cited by display analyst Ross Young and blogger yeux1122 on Naver.
During last month’s Galaxy Unpacked event, where the Galaxy S25 Series was revealed, a brief teaser of a tri-folding device was shown alongside the Project Moohan XR headset and an unreleased pair of smart glasses. This subtle teaser has sparked speculation about Samsung’s next big innovation in the foldable smartphone market.
Samsung Galaxy G Fold
The upcoming device may be named the Galaxy G Fold, following the success of Samsung’s Z Fold series. While the “G” branding’s exact meaning remains unclear, it is speculated to refer to the phone’s unique folding mechanism.
Unlike HUAWEI’s Mate XT, which featured an S-shaped fold that left part of the screen exposed, Samsung is reportedly opting for a G-shaped design. This design folds inward from both sides, fully protecting the display when closed. This innovative approach is expected to enhance durability, reducing the risk of scratches, impacts, and long-term wear.
Leaked Specifications: A Sneak Peek at the Galaxy G Fold
Key specifications for the Galaxy G Fold (as per leaks) include:
- Display: A 9.96-inch screen when unfolded, nearly 30% larger than the Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch display.
- Folded Height: Approximately 6.54 inches, making it similar in size to a standard smartphone.
- Weight and Thickness: Likely comparable to devices such as Huawei’s Mate XT but slightly thicker due to the new folding design.
- Materials: The Galaxy G Fold will incorporate newly developed displays and protective films that differ from those used in the current Z-series phones.
Expected Launch Timeline
Initially predicted for a 2026 launch, recent reports suggest that Samsung could unveil the Galaxy G Fold as early as Q3 2025. Ross Young has backed this timeline, and production of tri-fold components is expected to commence in Q2 2025, according to industry insider Jukanlosreve. However, the launch is likely to be limited, with an estimated 200,000 units being produced, indicating a niche market rather than a mainstream release.
In addition to the Galaxy G Fold, Samsung is also expected to introduce several other foldable devices this year. These include the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and a more affordable Z Flip 7 FE. The release of the tri-fold device could occur alongside these new foldables, though it remains unclear whether it will debut in 2025 or 2026.
