Vi has introduced a new initiative, ‘Vi Number Rakshak,’ at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj to address the growing concern of people getting lost during the event. With millions of pilgrims in attendance, the risk of family separation is significant.
Early reports from the first day alone indicated over 250 people were missing, while past events such as the 2013 Kumbh Mela saw around 70,000 individuals reported lost. The initiative aims to ensure no one feels disconnected, particularly the elderly and children, who may not have access to mobile phones or digital tools.
Complimentary Bracelets for Emergency Contacts
A key feature of the ‘Vi Number Rakshak’ initiative is the distribution of free bracelets at a dedicated booth located near Swami Ramanand Acharya Shibir Akhada. These bracelets, made from sacred Rudraksh and Tulsi beads, are engraved with the emergency contact numbers of family members or companions.
This simple yet effective solution helps pilgrims reconnect with their loved ones without relying on mobile phones or internet access. The initiative particularly supports those who may not be familiar with digital tools or may have trouble remembering phone numbers, offering a dependable means of communication.
Enhanced Network for Seamless Connectivity
To accommodate the massive influx of visitors, Vi has enhanced its network infrastructure at Triveni Sangam and surrounding areas. The company has added 30 new network sites and deployed approximately 40 macro and high-powered small-cells to cover critical locations.
Additionally, 32 km of fiber has been installed to improve backhaul connectivity. These efforts ensure clear voice calls, smooth video streaming, and high-speed data transfer, even in densely crowded areas. The upgrades are designed to offer uninterrupted connectivity for Vi users during the event.
Addressing the Challenge of Large Crowds
The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the largest human gatherings in the world, with millions of devotees expected, particularly during the ‘Shahi Snan’ this February. The fear of losing loved ones in the chaos is a common concern.
Vi’s initiative provides practical support, while also aligning with its broader philosophy of promoting connections and collective care, as demonstrated in its ‘Be Someone’s We’ campaigns. These efforts underscore the importance of public safety and well-being in large-scale events.
A Step Toward Inclusive Safety
‘Vi Number Rakshak’ reflects a commitment to inclusivity, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. By combining traditional elements such as Rudraksh and Tulsi beads with practical functionality, the initiative ensures that even those without digital access can stay safe. As the Maha Kumbh Mela continues, Vi’s efforts seek to reduce the stress of separation and improve the overall experience for all attendees.
Speaking on the occasion, Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer of Vi, highlighted the company’s people-first approach, saying,
Vi Number Rakshak demonstrates how even the simplest solutions can have a profound impact on keeping people connected. We are more than just a telecom provider; we are a people-first partner, especially in moments that matter most. This initiative reflects Vi’s dedication to delivering meaningful solutions and shows that connectivity extends far beyond the network.
