Google announced on Friday a postponement in the support for third-party autofill services autofill services on Chrome for Android. Initially scheduled for Chrome 131 in November, this feature will now be integrated into Chrome 135, expected to be released in April 2025.
Change in Schedule
In an October 2024 announcement, Google had planned to enable native support for third-party autofill services, including password managers, in Chrome 131, to allow direct form filling on websites. However, due to developer feedback, the release has been delayed, as confirmed in the latest announcement.
Eiji Kitamura, a Google developer advocate, noted on the Android Developers Blog, “Reflecting on feedback from autofill service developers, we’ve decided to shift the schedule to include third-party autofill services in Chrome 135.”
This change aims to improve user experience and security by allowing direct integration of third-party password managers or autofill services without the need for extensions or workarounds.
Since the initial announcement, Google has introduced several enhancements:
- Querying Chrome Settings: Autofill services can now verify if users have opted for third-party autofill within Chrome’s settings.
- Deep Linking: Services can now link directly to Chrome settings, enabling users to easily enable third-party autofill.
Updated Timeline
To incorporate developer feedback and facilitate necessary adjustments, Google has revised the rollout schedule:
- March 5, 2025: Chrome 135 beta release.
- April 1, 2025: Chrome 135 stable release.
- Summer 2025: Phase-out of Chrome’s compatibility mode.
Users will need to manually enable “Autofill using another service” in Chrome settings to maintain autofill functionality. Providers of autofill services should guide their users to toggle this setting for optimal use.
Compatibility Mode Discontinuation
Google has also confirmed that Chrome’s compatibility mode, which allows access to older versions of Chrome and modifies web page appearances, will be discontinued after summer 2025 as part of their ongoing update strategy.
