Reliance Jio is entering the smart TV operating system market with the launch of JioTele OS, after rumors. Designed specifically for smart televisions, the new platform aims to address what Jio identifies as limitations in the current connected TV landscape, particularly for Indian consumers.
Jio estimates there are approximately 35 million connected TV households in India, many of which struggle with limited customization options and restricted access to regional content.
JioTele OS focuses on accessibility and content variety. The company states its goal is to “transform Indian households with a fast, premium, and content-rich Smart TV platform at an affordable price.”
Jio emphasizes the platform’s AI-powered recommendations, seamless integration of global and regional content, support for major apps, and regular software updates.
Key features of JioTele OS include:
- AI-powered content recommendations: The OS will utilize AI to suggest content based on user viewing habits and trending programs. The specific algorithms used for these recommendations have not been detailed.
- 4K performance support: JioTele OS is optimized for 4K streaming, aiming to provide a smooth viewing experience. Actual performance will likely depend on the individual smart TV’s hardware capabilities.
- Integration of OTT, TV channels, and cloud gaming: The platform will offer access to a variety of OTT streaming services, live television channels, and cloud gaming platforms.
- Unified remote control: Users will be able to control various functions, including switching between TV channels, OTT apps, and cloud gaming, with a single remote.
- Software updates: JioTele OS will receive regular software updates, including security patches and support for new applications.
