TECNO today announced updates to its Universal Tone technology, enhancing how it captures diverse skin tones in mobile imaging.
The company said these changes improve skin tone accuracy and inclusivity across various ethnicities and settings. The update includes a new multi-skin tone color card with 372 patches and an enhanced Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine.
Expanded Skin Tone Database for Better Accuracy
TECNO has upgraded its multi-skin tone color card to feature 372 patches, representing a broad range of global skin tones. This covers regions such as Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
The company added that this tool improves the precision of skin tone measurement and quantification, aiding Universal Tone algorithms. At MWC 2025, TECNO will showcase two versions of this card—one focused on darker skin tones and another on lighter tones—to demonstrate its range.
Additionally, TECNO partnered with the University of Leeds and Dar Al-Hekma University in late 2024 to develop a Saudi-specific color card with 186 patches, tailored to that region’s skin tones.
Improved Color Restoration for Precision
The Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine now includes an upgraded CCM Skin Tone Calibration Algorithm and a Spectrum-Based Automatic White Balance (AWB) Algorithm.
TECNO said the CCM algorithm ensures precise color adjustments, while the AWB algorithm corrects color shifts in challenging lighting, such as single-color backgrounds.
These updates boost skin tone accuracy by over 50%, producing natural-looking photos. The company also introduced an Intelligent Skin-Tone Grading Exposure Algorithm, which adjusts brightness and tone consistently, even in difficult conditions like backlighting.
Focus on Inclusive Imaging
TECNO stressed its commitment to reducing skin tone bias and promoting inclusivity in imaging. The company said it uses a vast skin tone database to refine Universal Tone technology, aiming to lead the industry in accurate representation. These efforts highlight TECNO’s focus on diversity in mobile imaging.
TECNO at MWC 2025
The upgraded Universal Tone will debut with the TECNO CAMON 40 Series at MWC Barcelona 2025 in March. TECNO invites attendees to explore the technology at its booth in Hall 6, Stand 6B11, Fira Gran Via.
