Google Translate to get AI-powered follow-up feature soon

Google is working on a new AI-powered feature for Google Translate that allows users to interact with translations and gain deeper insights.

According to a report by Android Authority, references to this feature were found in a recent Google Translate APK teardown, and a demo showcases how it works. This feature aims to help users better understand and refine translations.

How the “Ask a Follow-Up” Feature Works:
  • Translation Insights: Once you input text for translation in the Google Translate app, a new “Ask a Follow-Up” button appears at the bottom of the results. Pressing the button provides additional context about the translation, explaining nuances and how the AI generated the result.
  • Customizable Tone and Style: Users can adjust translations using options like Formal, Simplify, Casual, Alternative Translations, Rephrase, and Regional Variants. These settings modify the tone and style of the translation.
  • Feedback and Audio: Users can listen to the translated text via a sound icon to hear pronunciation and tone. Thumbs up and thumbs down buttons allow users to rate the translation’s quality.
  • Additional Insights: The feature also offers cultural notes, grammar explanations, and regional variations, helping users understand how translations may differ based on context or location.
Availability

The feature was enabled in version 9.3.78.731229477.7 of the Google Translate app during testing. It’s not available to all users yet, and Google is likely to share an official update when it’s fully prepared for launch.
