Telegram has released a new update aimed at enhancing privacy, introducing new monetization tools, and improving user experience. The company said this update is designed to empower content creators and public figures while ensuring a safer and more practical platform for all users.
Star Messages: Filter Inbox and Earn Rewards
Telegram noted that users with Telegram Premium can now set a fee in Stars for incoming messages from people outside their contacts. This feature helps reduce spam, keep inboxes organized, and allows users to earn Telegram Stars. Key benefits include:
- Filtering out unwanted messages and minimizing inbox clutter.
- Restricting access from strangers unless they pay in Stars.
- Monetizing popularity while maintaining privacy.
- Extending to group chats to enhance discussions and earn Stars.
Telegram highlighted that users can customize these settings to allow specific people or groups to message for free, and they can issue Star refunds instantly when needed. To enable this feature:
- For private chats, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Messages.
- For groups, adjust permissions by enabling Charge Stars for Messages.
Contact Confirmation: Spot Scams Easily
The company introduced a contact confirmation feature that displays an info page when unknown users send a message for the first time. Telegram said this update helps users verify senders and avoid scams with details such as:
- The sender’s country (based on their phone number).
- Shared groups between you and the sender.
- Account history, including the join date and recent profile changes.
- Indicators for official, verified, or regular user accounts.
Telegram believes this feature will give users the confidence to make informed decisions before engaging with unknown contacts.
Gift Premium with Stars
Telegram said users can now use their earned Stars to gift Premium subscriptions to others. These subscriptions provide perks such as faster downloads, exclusive custom emojis, and more.
To send a Premium gift, users can open a contact’s profile, tap the three-dot menu, and select Send a Gift.
Withdraw Stars and Manage Group Funds
Stars earned through Star Messages can be withdrawn after 21 days via Fragment, Telegram noted. Users can redeem these Stars for Telegram Ads, TON blockchain collectibles, and more. Group owners can also track and manage their group’s Star balance directly from the group profile.
Pin Gifts on Profiles
Users can now pin up to six gifts on their profile cover, Telegram said. These gifts can be managed under Settings > My Profile > Gifts, allowing users to showcase their favorites.
Chromecast Streaming for Android
Telegram noted that Android users can now cast videos to Chromecast devices. Whether it’s for memes or presentations, this feature enables seamless streaming on larger screens. Users can access this by opening a video, tapping the Settings icon, and selecting Chromecast.
Verification Platform 2.0: Save on Authentication
Telegram emphasized that its Verification Platform is now 20% more affordable, offering user authentication services at just $0.01 per message, compared to $0.50 or more with traditional SMS.
Telegram believes this update will benefit startups by significantly cutting verification costs. Businesses can also set delivery time limits, ensuring undelivered codes are automatically refunded. The platform remains free for testing.
Availability
Telegram confirmed that the update (v11.8.1 or later) is available for iOS and Android users. Android users can download it from telegram.org/android or via the Google Play Store.
