Government blocks thousands of Skype and WhatsApp accounts in Digital Arrest Scam crackdown


Recently, digital arrest scams have been increasing where scammers deceive individuals by impersonating law enforcement officials and coercing victims into transferring money. To spread awareness on the same, DoT is conducting a caller tune campaign in different languages, and many would already be aware of it.

Further addressing the issue, Union Minister Sanjay Bandi Kumar, representing the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has proactively identified and blocked more than 3,962 Skype IDs and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts used for digital arrest scams.

Further, a detailed release is also provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs on steps taken to address the digital arrest scams. The government is spreading awareness through various channels, including Newspaper Ads, announcements in Delhi Metro, social media influencers, CyberDost social media profiles, and caller tunes promoting the Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) confirmed that as of February 28, 2025, more than 7.81 lakh SIM cards and 2,08,469 IMEIs, as reported by police authorities, have been blocked by the Government of India.

Additionally, the government has established the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) as an attached office to tackle all types of cyber crimes in a coordinated and comprehensive manner.
