Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce a live-translation feature for its AirPods, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This functionality will be part of a major software update expected later this year, alongside the launch of iOS 19, Apple’s next-generation mobile operating system.
AirPods live-translation feature
The feature is designed to deliver seamless real-time translation for in-person conversations. For example, when one person speaks Spanish, the AirPods will provide an English translation directly into the listener’s ears. In response, the listener’s reply will be translated into Spanish and played aloud via their iPhone’s speakers.
Gurman noted that Apple is catching up with competitors in this domain. Google introduced live-translation capabilities with its first-generation Pixel Buds in 2017 and expanded the feature to the Pixel Buds Pro in 2022, setting an industry benchmark for real-time language translation.
This development builds on Apple’s continuous efforts to enhance AirPods’ functionality. With iOS 18 last year, Apple introduced new hearing health features for the second-generation AirPods Pro. The upcoming update is expected to push the versatility of AirPods even further.
Availability and Launch Details
It remains uncertain whether this live-translation feature will be exclusive to the latest-generation AirPods Pro or extended to older models. With WWDC 2025 scheduled for June, Apple is anticipated to reveal more information and showcase these updates during the event.
