Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air is grabbing attention with new details surfacing from leaks and reports. Set to debut this fall, it’s expected to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever, about 2 mm slimmer than other models in the iPhone 17 lineup.
Slimmer iPhones Without USB-C Ports
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his recent report, revealed that Apple once planned to remove the USB-C port from the iPhone 17 Air, aiming to create “Apple’s first completely port-free iPhone.” He noted, “The iPhone 17 Air will foreshadow a move to slimmer models without charging ports.”
However, the company reportedly dropped this idea to avoid trouble with EU regulators, who’ve pushed Apple to adopt USB-C over its old Lightning port in recent years. Gurman added that Apple still hopes to pursue port-free designs for future slim iPhones, depending on how the iPhone 17 Air performs.
Gurman wrote, “The iPhone 17 Air represents the beginning of a sea change for Apple.” He said Apple executives believe a successful launch could pave the way for more portless, slimmer models. For now, the iPhone 17 Air keeps the USB-C port and is slated to include a 6.6-inch display, Dynamic Island, a Camera Control button, and battery life comparable to current iPhones.
iPhone 17 dummy units
Adding to the news, leaker Sonny Dickson recently posted photos of dummy units that also suggest it’ll feature MagSafe—easing earlier worries about its thin design—and an Action button replacing the Ring/Silent switch, a shift that’s not surprising but now visible.
Expected Pricing and Launch date
Pricing for the iPhone 17 Air is pegged at around $900, according to Gurman, positioning it between the base iPhone 17 and the two higher-end models.
Though nothing’s confirmed yet, rumors and leaks about the iPhone 17 series are sure to keep rolling in as the fall release approaches.
