Zoom Communications today announced a major update, unveiling new AI Companion capabilities, skills, and enhancements across its platform, including Zoom Meetings, Zoom Team Chat, Zoom Docs, Zoom Phone, Zoom Whiteboard, Zoom Contact Center, and tailored industry solutions.
AI Companion Upgrades for Efficiency
Zoom’s AI Companion now uses advanced agentic skills and specialized agents to deliver smarter results. It acts on users’ behalf, managing multi-step tasks with reasoning and memory to solve complex problems and adapt over time. The system orchestrates actions like scheduling or document creation seamlessly.
- New Skills: Features include calendar management to schedule meetings effortlessly, clip generation for fast video creation, and writing assistance for polished documents.
- Specialized Agents: Zoom Virtual Agent enhances customer self-service with empathetic, context-aware conversations and task resolution. A beta for customizable agents via AI Studio launches later this spring, while Zoom Revenue Accelerator users get a sales-focused agent in the coming months.
- Third-Party and Custom Agents: Soon, users can integrate agents like ServiceNow AI Agents or build custom ones for unique needs, such as sales RFPs or IT/HR requests. AI Companion will decide when to tap these agents to complete tasks.
Custom AI Companion Add-On
Zoom introduced the Custom AI Companion add-on, available in April for $12 per user per month. This lets organizations tailor the AI with AI Studio, adding custom meeting templates, dictionaries with business-specific vocabulary, and data from compatible third-party apps.
It also includes a digital personal AI coach (out in June) and custom meeting summary templates for use cases like one-on-one meetings or brainstorming.
- Custom Avatars: Included in the add-on (or sold separately), these AI-generated avatars create Zoom Clips from user scripts, reducing the need for retakes.
Zoom highlighted its federated AI approach, combining Small Language Models (SLMs) with third-party Large Language Models (LLMs) for top performance and cost-effectiveness. SLMs, trained on vast multilingual data, excel at specific tasks and multi-agent collaboration.
Task and Meeting Tools
AI Companion’s new skills cut manual work across Zoom Workplace, helping users focus on what matters.
- Zoom Tasks: Launching late March, it detects action items from meeting summaries, chats, and emails, then schedules follow-ups or drafts documents. Available in a new Zoom Workplace tab or embedded in Zoom Docs, it tracks personal and team tasks.
- Meeting Agendas: Out in May, hosts get recommended content from templates or past agendas, plus timers and live AI-generated notes. Summaries and action items are shareable post-meeting.
- Live Notes: Also due in May, real-time summaries for Meetings and Phone calls help users stay on track.
- Zoom Phone: AI now summarizes voicemails and supports Zoom for Microsoft Teams with call summaries and task extraction.
- Mobile Voice Recorder: Available late March, it transcribes and summarizes in-person talks, capturing action items with high-quality recordings.
- Workspace Reservation: Launching in May, it suggests in-office days based on teammates’ schedules and books desks or Zoom Rooms.
Enhanced Docs and Storage
Zoom Docs gains AI-powered upgrades for better content creation.
- Advanced Features: By June, AI searches internal and external data to craft documents based on user prompts.
- Data Tables: In July, AI auto-generates and labels tables from meeting summaries for easier organization.
- Zoom Drive: A central hub for meeting assets and Zoom Docs, launching in May.
Zoom noted that AI Companion remains free with paid accounts, though specialized capabilities, custom agents, or third-party integrations may carry additional fees.
Zoom Business Services
Zoom Business Services, spanning marketing, customer care, and sales, integrates AI-first solutions with Zoom Workplace to improve customer relationships.
- Zoom Contact Center: Virtual Agent gains natural language skills for complex queries and task execution across voice and chat (beta this spring). AI-intent routing, out late March, matches customers to the best agent. Advanced Quality Management, due in May, auto-scores 100% of interactions and offers supervisors a query interface for transcripts.
Industry-Specific Solutions
Zoom delivers tailored tools for key sectors.
- Frontline: Out in April, this mobile solution equips shift workers with AI-driven communication and task management.
- Clinicians: Launching late March, it auto-generates clinical notes for telehealth or in-office visits, freeing up time for patient care.
- Education: Due in May, it provides AI-generated lecture summaries and study materials, with live notes and engagement features later in 2025.
- Hardware Certification: Starting in April, Zoom certifies document cameras for education and patient-room cameras for healthcare.
The company cautioned that some features may vary by region or industry vertical. Zoom expects these updates to empower users, enhance workflows, and meet diverse needs with AI-driven precision.
