Vodafone Idea (Vi) has launched its 5G services in Mumbai, after testing it back in December last year. The company’s stated objective is to enhance mobile user experience through expanded coverage and competitive pricing.
The 5G service deployment, effective from the current date, is supported by Vi’s spectrum assets and infrastructure investments. The company emphasizes its commitment to delivering increased capacity, performance, and network reliability.
Vi’s 5G rollout in Mumbai incorporates equipment from Nokia, with a focus on energy efficiency and reduced operational overhead. An AI-based Self-Organizing Networks (SON) system has also been implemented to optimize network performance.
An introductory offer of unlimited 5G data is available to Vi subscribers on plans starting from Rs. 299, and offers unlimited 5G data, 1GB of 4G data, unlimited calls and 100 SMS/Day. The company positions this pricing as competitive within the current market. The service is designed to improve user experience for data-intensive applications, including video streaming, online gaming, video conferencing, and downloads.
Vi cites an OpenSignal report indicating the performance of its existing 4G network in Mumbai. The company’s 5G deployment is intended to address the increasing demand for high-bandwidth applications.
In the past 12 months, Vi has raised approximately Rs. 26,000 Crore in equity, including a Rs. 18,000 Crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO) and promoter contributions of approximately Rs. 4,000 Crore. These funds are allocated towards capital expenditure (capex) deployment.
The company has outlined a planned capex investment of Rs. 50,000 to 55,000 Crore over a three-year period, with the aim of expanding its 4G network coverage to approximately 90% of the Indian population and extending 5G services to key geographical regions.
Vi said that it will continue expanding its 5G footprint across India in a phased manner.
Commenting on the launch, Jagbir Singh, CTO, Vodafone Idea remarked:
