Nintendo Switch 2 with 7.9″ FHD 120Hz display, redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers announced

Nintendo has introduced the Nintendo Switch 2, featuring redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers, a larger screen, and compatibility with existing Switch games.

The company noted players can connect in “surprising new ways.” President Shuntaro Furukawa described it as the “next step in at-home gaming” that remains portable, building on “eight years of play and discovery” from the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2

The Nintendo Switch 2 measures 271.8mm wide, 114.3mm tall, and 13.9mm thick, weighing 399g with controllers attached. It features a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and variable refresh rate (VRR) support, though it lacks HDR10 on the display itself.

Nintendo emphasized its vivid visuals and smooth graphics, enhancing character movements and expressions during portable play. The console offers 256GB of internal storage—eight times that of the original Switch—and supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB for faster data speeds.

Powered by a custom NVIDIA processor—exact model and specifications undisclosed—the Switch 2 offers improved CPU and GPU performance, resulting in quicker load times and detailed graphics, the company said.

It includes a 5220mAh battery, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and an Ethernet option via the dock. Audio is upgraded with clearer, balanced sound and 3D audio support in handheld or tabletop mode, plus 5.1 PCM output through the dock.

The package contains:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Joy-Con 2 controllers (left and right)
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • Joy-Con 2 Straps
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
  • USB-C Charging Cable

The Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically, feature larger SL/SR buttons and analog sticks, and lack the original’s red-blue scheme, using black with color highlights. Nintendo added that each controller can function as a mouse for aiming in supported games.

The console includes two USB-C ports—one on top, one on bottom—for charging or accessories like a camera, plus an adjustable kickstand for flexible viewing angles.

Key Features

GameChat Connects Players: Activated by a “C” button on the right Joy-Con 2, GameChat enables voice chats with up to 12 friends using a built-in mic. Up to four can share screens, and a separate USB-C camera allows video chats. Free until March 31, 2026, it will then require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Dock Performance Boost: The dock outputs 4K at 60fps or 1080p/1440p at 120fps with HDR10 and active cooling, ensuring smooth TV play, the company noted. It supports compatible games and TVs for enhanced visuals.

Game Compatibility and Sharing: The Switch 2 plays most physical and digital Switch games, though some may not be fully compatible. Existing Joy-Con and Pro Controllers connect wirelessly. GameShare allows players to share a title locally or online with GameChat, even if others don’t own it. Virtual game cards manage digital titles, enabling offline play or lending within a family group via local wireless.

Nintendo Switch Online and GameCube Titles

Nintendo Switch Online supports GameChat and existing features, with a free period until March 2026, after which a membership is required. The Expansion Pack adds GameCube games like F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II at launch, with improved visuals. A wireless GameCube-style controller and a new Switch 2 Pro Controller with a headphone jack and GL/GR buttons are available for members.

  • Adjustable Kickstand: A wide, stable stand adjusts freely for ideal angles.
  • Accessibility Options: Includes font size adjustments, screen reader, and speech-to-text in GameChat.
  • Parental Controls: Nintendo highlighted safety features like reporting options and parental approval for kids under 16 via the updated Parental Controls App.
