Google rolls out auto-restart security feature to Android

Google is rolling out a new security feature for Android devices that will automatically restart phones or tablets if they remain locked for three consecutive days. This feature is part of the latest Google Play services update, version 25.14.

As stated in the changelog from April 14, the auto-restart applies to “Phones,” with tablets also expected to be included. Devices in other categories—such as Android Auto, Wear OS, Android TV, and Windows PCs running the Play Games app—are not affected by this feature.

How the Auto-Restart Works

The report from 9to5Google explained that the auto-reboot feature triggers after a device remains unused and locked for over 72 hours. When the device restarts, it enters a Before First Unlock (BFU) state.

In this state, the device data is encrypted and more secure because the passcode has not been entered yet, and biometric login methods are not yet active. On Pixel devices, a message on the lockscreen reads: “Unlock for all features and data.”

In contrast, once the device is unlocked, it moves to the After First Unlock (AFU) state, where more data becomes accessible.

Optional Feature in the Future

On April 16, Google updated the changelog to clarify that this auto-restart feature will be optional in future updates. This change appears to address concerns from users who keep Android devices running continuously, especially on tablets.

Availability and Rollout

The feature will gradually roll out with Play services 25.14 over the next week. However, full activation of the auto-restart feature may take longer to reach all devices. Since this feature is tied to Google Play Services, most Android devices should receive the update without needing a full system upgrade.

At this time, Google has not provided additional details, such as which specific Android versions will support the feature or if a user-facing setting will be made available. It is also unclear whether users will receive a notification when the device restarts automatically.
