Amazon setting up fulfillment center at Mumbai in India

Reuters is reporting that the world’s largest e-commerce site Amazon.com is in the process of setting up it’s first fulfillment center at Mumbai in India. Reuters is stating this based on certain job openings on Amazon India’s career portal. Amazon already has a presence in India in Chennai , Bangalore and Hyderabad but these centers only handle R&D and customer service.

FoneArena has learnt that this company would operate as Amazon Seller Services Private Limited . The company owns amazon.in and amazon.co.in. It’s not clear if the company will use these urls to handle orders from India.Interestingly , a job listing was posted on 10th Oct 2011 for Manager Delivery Operations. This role involves setting up infrastructure in the city for delivering products to customers. Knowledge of topography of Mumbai is also required for the job which is a strong indication that the e-commerce giant is planning to actually do business in India.

Amazon currently ships a small number of items from it’s vast catalog to India. These orders are mostly fullfilled by Amazon USA or Amazon UK. I had purchased a Logitech Revue Google TV on Amazon USA and a couple of programming books on Amazon UK and the items took few weeks to arrive. Now there were some recent rumours about Amazon starting India operations and the latest in the series is the information about the fullfillment center in Mumbai. If it turns out to be  true, shipping time to most cities in India will drop to a few days. Flipkart has been doing a remarkable job
