Amazon India fortifies defenses against e-commerce fraud

Recently, India has experienced a sharp rise in fraudulent activities across social media, e-commerce, enterprise, and fintech platforms, accounting for around 57% of incidents linked to these platforms. With e-commerce being an easy gateway for bad actors, Amazon India has reassured its multi-layered safety approach in combating these scams.

Amazon India Safety Measures for e-commerce Fraud

To combat fraud related to package deliveries, Amazon has implemented measures such as One-Time Password (OTP) verification for valuable, sensitive, or high-stakes deliveries and Open Box Delivery to ensure the correct product is delivered.

Additionally, the company instructs consumers to check for any signs of tampering or damage to the security seals and to return the package immediately if any issues are found.

To combat seller-side scams, Amazon India has deployed a seller verification process to minimize fraud and ensure a trustworthy marketplace. Further, the company also said it has implemented advanced machine learning algorithms that analyze system-wide data to detect suspicious patterns, identify potential fraudulent activities, and prevent them.

Consumer Best Practices to Avoid E-Commerce Scams

As consumers, we must follow certain guidelines to help avoid falling victim to the growing number of e-commerce scams. It includes:

  • Receive your packages from the delivery associates by yourself or through someone you trust.
  • Do not share delivery OTPs with unknown people or over the phone.
  • Once received, the package must be inspected for any issues with the packaging on the outside, and a tampered parcel should be returned immediately at the time of delivery.
  • Never share sensitive information, and always verify the authenticity of offers by logging into your account on the official Amazon app or website only.
  • Report issues promptly to customer service, available 24/7.

Regarding the matter, Akshay Sahi, Director & Head of Amazon Prime, Speed & Fulfilment Experience, India, said,

As a customer-centric company, we’re committed to fostering a safe and trusted shopping experience. We encourage our customers to actively participate in safeguarding their online shopping by remaining vigilant and adhering to recommended security practices.

Additionally, we also prioritize seller safety through multiple initiatives. For instance, by filing Safe-T claims, sellers can address delivery or payment issues efficiently, allowing Amazon to investigate and resolve the matter. Timely reporting helps avoid delays and ensures that the seller’s account remains protected.
