Nikon ZR Firmware Version 2.00 update brings RED colour science for H.265 recording

Nikon ZR Firmware Version 2.00 update

Nikon India has announced Firmware Version 2.00 for the Nikon ZR, marking the camera’s first major firmware update since its launch in October 2025.

The update adds RED’s Log3G10 gamma and REDWideGamutRGB colour gamut for H.265 recording, along with adjustable High ISO Noise Reduction, expanded custom controls and improvements to monitoring and image processing.

What’s new in Nikon ZR Firmware Version 2.00

RED colour science for H.265 recording

Firmware Version 2.00 adds Log3G10 gamma to the tone mode options for H.265 recording, enabling users to shoot in the REDWideGamutRGB colour gamut. This brings RED colour science to the compact H.265 format, with high colour-grading latitude, smooth tonal gradation and an exceptionally wide colour gamut, while allowing smaller file sizes and longer recording times.

High ISO Noise Reduction can also be adjusted to one of four levels when recording in the following formats:

  • H.265/N-Log
  • ProRes 422 HQ/N-Log

Users can select a level based on their project, subject or delivery requirements to balance detail and smoothness.

Customisable command dials and function buttons

The update lets users assign the following settings to the command dials:

  • ISO sensitivity
  • Exposure compensation
  • White balance (WB)
  • Colour temperature (WBK)

Users can also assign 3D LUT/View Assist to an Fn button, allowing them to switch between these settings with a single operation and make adjustments without looking away from the monitor.

Monitoring and focus-assist enhancements

Firmware Version 2.00 adds focus peaking support when a 3D LUT is applied during recording in R3D NE format, a RAW format developed for Nikon cameras to deliver the distinctive colour science of cinema cameras from RED Digital Cinema Inc. This allows filmmakers and content creators to confirm precise focus, including when shooting with a shallow depth of field while previewing the final look.

The update also supports applying a 3D LUT to HDMI video output, allowing users to check a rendering close to the finished image on an external monitor.

Reduced flicker in dark areas

The update introduces new processing to suppress frame-by-frame fluctuations in black levels, helping reduce visible flicker in shadows, particularly in high-ISO scenes. This can help produce more consistent-looking footage in low-light environments with large areas of shadow.

Availability

Nikon has announced Firmware Version 2.00 as an upcoming update for the ZR. It is scheduled for release before the end of 2026, although Nikon has not specified an exact release date.

Speaking on the update, Sajjan Kumar, Managing Director, Nikon India Pvt. Ltd., said:
