Samsung has been working on a solution for NAND flash optimized file systems and has submitted an open source solution to the Linux kernel. The F2FS file system or Flash Friendly File System has been designed keeping in mind the memory requirements of mobile devices. Based on a log-structured method, it tackles problems faced by file systems designed for traditional hard disk storage.
Samsung has open sourced its efforts and submitted the file system to the Linux kernel. There is a possibility that we could find an implementation of the new file system in future Android hardware. Sharp had recently licensed Microsoft’s exFAT file system for use in its Android devices. Owing to the open source nature of F2FS we should expect to see it gain some traction in the coming months.
