At an event here in Barcelona, Huawei which is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world has introduced its brand new flagship. The Huawei Ascend P2 powered by a custom designed 1.5Ghz quad core processor clocks in at just 8.4 milimetres. There’s Android 4.1 on board with a custom UI layer on top that Huawei calls the Emotion UI.
In terms of design the phone looks a lot like its predecessor, the Ascend P1. There’s 1GB of RAM onboard and 16GB of storage. The Ascend P2 is part of Huawei strategy to make its foray into the B2C business. The phone is priced strategically at 399 Euros.
Over at the back you can see the 13MP camera. The camera is capable of recording video not just in Full HD resolution but also in HDR mode.
On the side you can spot the dedicated camera key, power key.
The left side only has the volume rocker and sports a rather clean profile. The phone is also equipped with an NFC chip.
The screen is an in cell touch display but the image quality wasn’t particularly impressive. Visibility in bright light was decent though. You can spot a bit of a gap between the glass layer on top and the actual panel.
The screen size itself is 4.7 inches and the resolution is 720p. Its a shame that Huawei has not gone with the 2013 standard of using full HD displays.
The phone is heavily skinned so that’s something you’ll want to keep in mind as well. That said, the UI animations seemed fluid enough in our brief time with the phone.
The phone doesn’t feel particularly premium with the heavy use of plastics but the matte finish helps for sure. The tactile feedback from buttons is also not too bad. The Huawei Ascend P2 is expected to be available sometime Q2 for EUR 399.
