MediaTek’s chipsets are very popular with the range of budget smartphone manufacturers in India. We’ve seen our fair share of smartphones powered by the MT6589 chipset which strikes a good balance between power, battery life and perhaps what is more important for the category, price. The brand new MT6572 chipset will help drive costs even further down while providing more functionality for phones in that segment.
The dual core 1.2Ghz ARM Cortex A7 based processor supports HSPA+ 3G and TD-SCDMA for China based customers. The all in one chipset bundles Bluetooth, GPS and WiFi. The chipset can however power screens at only up to qHD resolution. Camera capabilities too top off at 5MP sensors and 720p video. This further reaffirms the fact that we will see this chip in the budget smartphone category. Going by recent trends, expect phones powered by the MT6572 to be available around June at a price point at or even below Rs. 10,000.
