ASUS Fonepad gaming performance review

The ASUS Fonepad, the first calling tablet with a Nexus 7-like design left quite an impression on us, and you would know if you had read our review. But a lot of people were asking us how the performance of the tablet was, in terms of gaming, because, it being powered by the Intel Z2420 chip, only has the PowerVR SGX540 GPU which is pretty ancient in current terms. So, here you go, a gaming performance review of the ASUS Fonepad in video –

The ASUS Fonepad is the first Intel based calling tablet, which is based on the lexington low end chip. It was supposed to be only for phones with HVGA or WVGA screens but it seems to have ended up on a 7 inch tablet with a 1280×800 screen. So, how is the gaming performance like, you ask? Pretty bad we would say.

We tested out four games to be exact, each with varying levels of graphic intensity and detail. First up, we wanted to go light and tested the Subway surfers game, it terribly lagged and struggled to register our touch inputs responsively. We think it might be due to the resolution having an impact on the graphics processor. Then again, a game is a game and if it is unplayable, it is not. And that’s the case with the Fonepad. Temple Run 2, another endless runner that is very very popular, seems to run just fine on the fonepad. With low resolution textures and not-so-great graphics, the game managed to do just fine, which was a sigh of relief for us, because we thought it would be even worse.

Next up, we tried two Gameloft titles, the Asphalt 7 and Modern Combat 4. Both are graphically intensive and need good amounts of graphical power to play. The Asphalt version that was automatically downloaded is a low end optimized version from Gameloft which has low resolution textures and a very small view distance for the rendering. So, the game did just fine and it was totally playable. While the low end optimized version was downloaded for the Modern Combat game too, the GPU just struggled entirely to render and we deemed it totally unplayable if you could notice in the video.

So, there you go, these are our observations of the Gaming performance review on the ASUS Fonepad. Let us know if you want to hear more, we will let you know when we can.
