Over at the SID display exhibition in Vancouver, LG plans to show off its new unbreakable and flexible OLED panel. This 5 inch panel would be in addition to the 55 inch OLED TV that they previously talked about. The OLED panel targets mobile devices and has a display constructed of plastic. This plastic construction makes it flexible and unbreakable.
LG will also demo new 5, 7 inch HD Oxide TFT panels which feature a bezel that is just 1mm wide. This would result in a borderless screen. Both the displays are lightweight and much more power efficient compared to competing panels.
“Recent trends indicate that the small- and medium-sized display market is moving towards high resolution and low power consumption, and the large panel market to OLED and Ultra HD,” said Dr. Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. “With the resulting rapid need for new display advancements, LG Display, at the forefront of these trends, is well positioned to lead the market with its differentiated and cutting-edge technologies.”
LG is not just targeting the mobile segment as it’ll also introduce some new panels for use in refrigerators and automative dashboards. A new 14 inch screen with a resolution of 2560×1440 is being introduced for use in laptops. Flexible panels are all set to be the next big thing in display technology as they could help us avoid shattered screens on dropping the device.
