Tablet shipments expected to exceed total PC shipments in 2015

IDC, the analysis company that analyses several markets every quarter has released a report that Tablet shipments are all set to overtake total PC shipments in 2015. With a rapidly growing tablet market, IDC notes that the landscape is changing after the flood of low cost Android tablets with screen sizes less than 8 inches, which might contribute as much as 57% of the total tablet market in 2017, while the rest is constituted by bigger tablets, mostly the iPad. The iPad mini too might be a  proven driver in the sales of small tablets.

However, the focal point of IDC’s analysis is that people are going to buy more and more tablets, and they will be more than the number of PCs bought in 2015. This is, considering the fact that only Android and iOS dominate the space. Recently, we heard from the same IDC that Windows based tablets, either RT or x86, have grown already up to 7% of the total market, in its launch year, which is not a lot but a strong growth for a new comer. Windows Tablets are actually PCs that can do a lot more than iPads can, but will that mean people are buying new PCs or are these tablets still just “tablets” used for specific purposes, we are not really sure.

Anyways, the market is ripe for expansion, and it seems that IDC have almost written the big screened tablets off, with only 6% projected share of the tablet market in 2017. The rapidly changing market space should be fun to watch. Stay tuned to our blog for more updates in this particular space, we will be seeing more data from IDC in time.
