Pegatron CEO: Budget iPhone won’t be cheap

Pegatron’s CEO recently revealed to shareholders that the widely rumored budget iPhone won’t be cheap. The company has been charged with production responsibilities for the handset if rumors are to be believed and will be manufacturing the lower cost phone in a myriad of colors.

The CEO however revealed that while it will be cheaper than the current iPhone, it won’t compete with bargain basement Android devices. Expect to see a strategy similar to the iPad Mini where the company cut down specifications and kept its design standards high. Previous rumors and leaks suggest that the handset will have a polycarbonate back like that of the iPhone 3G. It is also believed that Apple will finally introduce the iPhone in a range of colors to make it appealing to a younger demographic. The budget iPhone will hence end up being a premium mid range handset. In contract subsidized markets like North America, expect to see the phone sell for $99.
