Micromax is looking to start assembling its phones in India starting next year, according to reports. The company might be the second largest smartphone vendor in India, it still imports all of its devices from China to sell it here. The original device manufacturers in China who do contract manufacturing for companies like Micromax, Karbonn and so many others, have enabled the influx of cheap and powerful smartphones for our market. With the ever expanding growth of the smartphone market in India, Micromax, which boasts 21 percent of the Indian market, might surely find that the logistics of import is definitely an issue, and the company is looking to fix it.

We have a plant in Rudrapur and have already started assembling of phones on trial basis there. It will be commercially launched in the first quarter of next year

says Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax. Rudrapur is located in Uttarakhand, a northern state in India. Micromax’s assembling facility, which seems to be already testing assembling its phones on a trial basis, looks to go commercial by the first quarter next year. The components will indeed be imported from China, but the assembling of the phones and the packaging are set to be operational from India. This is a radical change for the company, as it plans to expand its market reach further beyond India and into Europe. Catering the home market with an in-house assembling facility seems like a wise move to further increase the profit margins, or may be even cheaper devices! Companies like Samsung and Nokia have long been assembling their phones from the Indian market, as we noted in our piece on the Nokia manufacturing facility we visited earlier.

With Russia, Romania and other European markets in sight, Micromax plans to deliver 20 new devices in the next six months. On a related note, we did unbox the latest from them, the Micromax Canvas Turbo. Do check it out, and let us know what you think of this move. Is it going to benefit the Indian market? Discuss.
