Great Online Shopping Festival, aka GOSF, by Google was an initiative by the Mountain View company to bring a “Cyber Monday” like deals bonanza to India last year, and it is back again this year, with more partners and of course, more deals. Unlike Black Friday, Cyber Monday and GOSF are online-only, and Google aims to attract the eager buyers of the legion of Indian internet shoppers, with deals on a single platform. That single platform is the website – GOSF.in, which lists all the partners and even has a countdown for the first day of the shopping festival, which begins on December 11th and ends on the 13th. 3 days, over 200 partners including all major e-tailers, and hopefully insane deals. Will this year be defining for the Indian e-commerce industry?
For a perspective of the Indian internet population – there are about 200 million users in the country, 10% of them being online shoppers. This is expected to grow to 50 million in the coming years, but in order to raise awareness of online shopping, shopping festivals like GOSF do help. According to Google, GOSF last year saw over 350% growth for participating retailers, with 50% of them being new online shoppers. This response has spurred the second edition this year, with more partners wanting in a slice of this juicy pie.
Rajan Anandan, VP & Managing Director, Google India says, “Great Online shopping festival is India’s version of cyber monday in the west and is an exciting platform to raise awareness and consumer adoption of online shopping in India. With over 200 million Internet users in the country, more and more Internet users are opting to shop online and fueling the growth of both large multinational and homegrown companies. Industry estimates suggests that there are close to 20 million online shoppers in India and its estimated to grow to 50 million in next few years making it a 16 billion dollar industry.”
Well, it’s pretty much established that Online Shopping is growing at a break neck speed in India, and the list of partners shows that GOSF is going to exciting this time around.
