Sony Xperia Z1 compact with 4.3-inch 720p display, 20.7 MP camera announced

At their CES keynote, Sony has just announced a brand new device that brings flagship level features in a much smaller shell. Called the Sony Xperia Z1 compact, the smartphone is practically the same as the Z1 internally but the difference lies in how much smaller it is now.

Sony Xperia Z1 compact Specifications

  • 4.3-inch (1280 x 720pixels) Triluminos Display with X-Reality for Mobiles
  • 2.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor
  • Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean)
  • Single Aluminium frame with tempered glass on the front and back
  • 20.7MP Primary Camera with Exmos RS sensor, HDR photos & videos, 1080p video recording.
  • 2.2 MP front-facing camera with 720p video recording
  • 9.4mm thick and weighs 140 grams
  • IP55 / IP58 rating for dust and water resistance
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, Upto 64GB expandable memory via microSD card
  • LTE / 3G, WiFi 820.11 a/b/g/n/ac , Bluetooth 4.0 with APT-X, GPS/ GLONASS, MHL, NFC
  • 2300mAh Battery with STAMINA mode

The phone has the same 20.7MP camera sensor as well as the 2.2 Ghz quad core Snapdragon 800 processor. You also get connectivity features like LTE, WiFi b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0. Other options include GPS, MHL and NFC.

Amongst the tradeoffs for a smaller device, we see that the battery capacity has been reduced from 3,000 mAh to 2,300 mAh. This coupled with the resolution drop from 1080p to 720p means that the battery should just about last a day of usage. The display however is now of the IPS variety so users should expect to see much better color accuracy and viewing angles. The phone will be available in a range of colors including black, white, lime and pink starting February 2014.
