Google announced their 35$ dongle – Chromecast at the Google I/O 2013 event last year. At launch, Chromecast was restricted to US and eventually started rolling out to other countries. It is officially available in India and is priced around Rs. 3,300 from Amazon. What this Chromecast does is that it lets you stream content from your iOS or Android device or PC to your TV via WiFi.
At launch, Chromecast was restricted to very few applications and there wasn’t much official support from Google after that as well. But now, Google has opened up the Chromecast and it allows developers to let make their apps stream content to Chromecast. Google Chromecast connects to TV via a HDMI port and connects to WiFi network through which content is streamed.
Some of the official apps that support Chromecast so far are Netflix, HBO GO, Pandora, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Google Play TV and Movies and many more. With Google opening up the Chromecast support via Google Cast Software Development Kit, more developers can allow their apps to stream wireless content to TV. For users, it means that they can enjoy more content from their smartphone directly on their TV and all they have to do is to look for the Chromecast symbol inside their apps.
