2007, a Blockbuster year for Mobile Phones

2007 was a blockbuster year for Mobile phones. Apprx. 1 billion mobile phones were sold in the year 2007. 2007 also saw some unique launches with Nokia launching their N Series devices followed by Apple launching the iPhone, which created ripples in the mobile phone industry. Gartner says that the sales of 2007 are 16% more than that of 2006. No one will get any points for guessing that Nokia was and is still the market leader in the global mobile phone market, with North America still not conquered as rest of the regions. Nokia claims a share of 40% and has sold 435 million mobile handsets, hmm that’s a really big number and with so many launched lined in 2008 Nokia is set to rule again. Apart from Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung are giving good fight to Nokia in developed as well as emerging markets and I feel that Sony Ericsson is a kind of dark horse, which will make Nokia feel uncomfortable in most of the regions. Anyways, all this is attributed to emerging markets like India and China, which have become major growth drivers for this industry, who says population explosion is a bane; it has proved to be a boon for the mobile phone industry.
