Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, 2.5 GHz quad-core SoC unveiled

Qualcomm Technologies, today unveiled the Snapdragon 801 processor (MSM8974AC) with slight enhancements to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 800 SoC. It has support larger, faster camera sensors and improved image post-processing, better, faster GPU,, higher speed SD card memory, dedicated hardware for dual-SIM/dual active (DSDA) service in China, and enhanced overall performance.

Qualcomm unveiled their first 64-bit Octa-Core SoC, the Snapdragon 615 along with the quad-core Snapdragon 610 SoC earlier today.

 Highlights of Qualcomm Snapdragon 801

  • Up to 2.5 GHz quad-core 32-bit Krait 400 quad-core CPU
  • 578MHz Adreno 330 GPU
  • Integrated 4G LTE Cat 4 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi for seamless connectivity
  • dual-SIM/dual active (DSDA) service in China
  • eMMC Interface 5.0 for speeds up to 400MBps
  • UltraHD 4K video support DTS-HD, Dolby Digital Plus and 7.1 surround sound
  • Dual Image Signal Processors (ISPs)

As noted by the AnandTech, the 801 would be the company’s flagship until the Snapdragon 805 arrives in 2015. The Snapdragon 801 processor is expected to be available in commercial devices this quarter. We had already seen the Sony Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 tablets with the processors.
