Google has updated its Gmail app for iPhone and iPad to version 3.0, that brings the most expected background app refresh feature finally. This lets all your Gmail messages pre-fetched and synced, when you open the app. The background app refresh was introduced in the iOS 7. So this requires iOS 7 and at least one type of notification (badge, alert, or banner) to be turned on.
iOS learns patterns based on your use of the device and tries to predict when an app should be updated in the background, so it doesn’t drain your battery, even if the background app refresh is enabled.
You can enable the background fresh options from Settings > General > Background App Refresh. This update also brings support for sign-in across Google iOS apps, including Maps, Drive, YouTube and Chrome. if you sign in to one, you’ll be signed in to all. If you have 2-step verification code, you don’t have to login every time you navigate to another Google app.
Download Gmail 3.0 for iPhone and iPad from the Apple iTunes Store, if you don’t have it yet.
