Google brings Android smartphone and tablet mirroring to Chromecast

Google has officially launched Android  mirroring on the Chromecast. Originally announced at the I/O the feature will let Chromecast owners with Android devices to “cast” mobile apps, photos, videos, and anything else from their device’s screen over to their TV sets.

“Now, anything on your Android device will appear on the TV. You can share photos stored on your phone with a group of friends, or scope out the scenery for your next family vacation together on the big screen using Google Earth.”

wrote Chromecast product manager Ambarish Kenghe in a blog post.

In order to start mirroring, users will have to open the Chromecast app, select “Cast Screen” from the navigation drawer, and then choose the Chromecast device connected to your television. To use the feature, Android users will need the updated Chromecast version 1.7 app found in the Google Play Store. In addition to video, mirroring feature also supports sound and will play out of your TV’s speaker set-up, as opposed to through your phone’s speakers.

As the feature is currently in beta it is not available to all Android devices yet. Only selected popular models from Samsung, LG and HTC can avail the feature. Nexus users can start using the feature right away simply by heading to Quick setting menu. This is similar to Apple’s AirPlay offering for iOS devices.
