Twitter has scooped up Twitpic, a service that allowed users to attach photos to their tweets. The micro blogging site will maintain Twitpic’s domain and photo archive.
“I’m happy to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to give them the Twitpic domain and photo archive, thus keeping the photos and links alive for the time being. Twitter shares our goal of protecting our users and this data. Also, since Twitpic’s user base consists of Twitter users, it makes sense to keep this data with Twitter”.
posted Twitpic creator Noah Everett announced Saturday in a blog post.
Twitpic was built on Twitter’s API, offering users a way to share photo which Twitter started offering in 2011. The company announced in September that it would be closing down and deleting all the pictures it had hosted. Soon after, the company announced that it would be shutting down fully on October 25 due to lack of interest. However, few weeks later it said that it is close to an acquisition which did not fell through.
As a result of the Twitter acquisition, Twitpic will no longer accept new photos or data, and its application has been removed from the Google Play and Apple App stores. Users can still login to their profile to delete content or account and they can also export and download their data / photo archive on Twitpic.com.
