Asus is all set to join the “Make in India” initiative by starting manufacturing of smartphones in the country. The Taiwanese smartphone maker will foray into contract manufacturing for its mobile phones in India, as per a latest report from IANS.
Peter Chang, country manager at Asus India told the agency that the company will select a partner that can be Foxconn or any other contract manufacturer and start manufacturing by the end of third quarter of this calendar year. The company will then start delivering the phones by the end of the fourth quarter. He added that as the company wants to focus on the product it has decided to hire a contract manufacturer. Asus, which has gained foothold in Indian markets with its Zenfone series, aims to make 70% of its smartphones in the country.
At present, Asus has a 2% share in India’s smartphone market and aims to increase it to 5% by the end of next year. The company made a profit of around Rs.935 crore in the last financial year, out which 40 percent revenues came from smartphones, added the report. Asus was reported to start a production unit in India in April this year.
Vivo, HTC, Sony, Microsoft, LG, Lenovo, Motorola, Asus, Micromax, Celkon and Karbonn are some of the national and international smartphone makers that have announced their plans to kick start manufacturing smartphones in India.
