Apple is planning to adopt advanced micro-LED display technology in its wearable devices, according to a latest report from Nikkei Asian Review. The next gen Apple Watch with micro-LED display could arrive as soon as 2018.
Apple was rumored to be working on micro LED panels for next Apple Watch. The company currently uses OLED panels on the watch. Micro LED display technology as it consumes low power and offers better color gamuts and brightness levels than LCD. Another reason for Apple to make the switch to micro LED is speculated as the company wants to cut the dependence on Samsung Electronics for OLED display. Corroborating previous reports, it is stated that Apple’s micro-LED efforts will be housed in a plant in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
The report further says that Apple is the “only company” that is currently in a position to roll out micro-LED on a larger scale, especially in the technology’s early development stages. “Apple is working very hard to foster the micro-LED technology … the company could push the use of new display tech as early as next year,” an executive with close knowledge of display technology told the publication.
