Instagram Co-founders; Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger today have announced that they have resigned and plan to leave the company in the coming weeks. This move adds challenges to Instagram’s parent company, Facebook. kevin Systrom who is currently Instagram’s chief executive, and Mike Krieger, the chief technical officer have notified Instagram’s leadership team and Facebook about their decision to leave the company.

However, Instagram Co-founders; Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger did not give a reason for stepping down. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, in a statement said: “all the best and I’m looking forward to seeing what they build next.” This move comes at times when Facebook is facing toughest of times in its 14 years of existence where it is being criticised for being careless of the user data.

Against all the odds, Instagram remained a gem and it recently hit a billion monthly active users and Stories has 400 million daily users. This departure might create some uncertainty around the app and the moment it is unclear who would lead the company in the days to come.

Kevin Systrom, Co-Founder & CEO said:

Mike and I are grateful for the last eight years at Instagram and six years with the Facebook team. We’ve grown from 13 people to over a thousand with offices around the world, all while building products used and loved by a community of over one billion. We’re now ready for our next chapter.

We remain excited for the future of Instagram and Facebook in the coming years as we transition from leaders to two users in a billion. We look forward to watching what these innovative and extraordinary companies do next.
