Mini-LED technology is widely accepted to be the next big mainstream display technology and companies are now slowly adopting the tech in their devices. According to popular supply analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is said to increase the rate of adoption of Mini-LED displays in the industry with the launch of their upcoming, redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.
With Apple introducing Mini-LED displays on the high MacBook Pro models, the demand for the technology should see a massive increase. Along with this, whenever Apple adopts a new industry technology, it is quite common to see other companies also introduce it in their products. Consequently, the display industry in this case will increase their investments to meet the increased demand and bring down production costs.
In a research note, Ming-Chi Kuo said:
We believe that MacBooks, not iPads, mainly drive Mini LED panel shipments. MacBook shipments have not grown much in the past few years. However, we expect MacBook shipments to grow significantly by 20% YoY, or more in 2021 and 2022, due to the adoption of Mini LED panels, Apple Silicon, and all-new designs.
Currently, the rumours suggest that the upcoming MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch will have a new design with MagSafe charging port, a HDMI port, SD card slot, no Touch Bar, and will be powered by the next generation Apple Silicon. The MacBook Air is also reportedly being redesigned to be lighter and have thinner bezels, but this will arrive later on in 2022.
Lastly, in the background, Apple is working on the development of Micro-LED displays, which is expected to arrive in the market sometime around 2023-2024. However, the development is very much in its early stages and there are apparently no production schedules as of yet.
