Windows 11: Android app support to roll out widely in February along with taskbar improvements and easier window sharing

Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 back in June 2021. At that time, the company said that it will be adding native support for Android apps via the Amazon App Store. The feature finally rolled out to Windows 11 Insider beta testers in the US back in October last year. Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Windows + Devices has announced that a new public preview will roll out next month, bringing the feature more widely.

This feature will be available through the Microsoft Store and partnerships with Amazon and Intel, said the company. Microsoft already said that the apps will run on a subsystem that is based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) version 11. It will still be in beta, so it might take time for the stable roll-out.

The update coming next month will also bring taskbar improvements with call mute and unmute, easier window sharing, bring weather to the taskbar, and also add two new redesigned apps, Notepad and Media Player.

The insider build brought the Android app support only to the US, so it is not clear if the public preview build releasing next month will bring Android app support globally.
