French electronics company Thomson is preparing to enter the Indian laptop market, as reported by Economic Times. The company is in final talks with a Noida-based contract manufacturer to produce laptops within the country.
Seizing Opportunity with Indian Government’s Laptop Import Restrictions
Thomson plans to make the most of the Indian government’s new rules that limit laptop imports from November 1. This decision gives Thomson a chance to grow in the Indian market.
Since re-entering India in 2018 through a partnership with SPPL, Thomson has mainly focused on making and selling TVs on Flipkart. This approach will also apply to their laptops.
Aligned with Government Initiatives
Thomson’s move fits well with the government’s efforts to promote local manufacturing. Initiatives like the production-linked incentive (PLI) program and the Make in India campaign encourage companies to make their products within the country.
The government’s decision to restrict imported IT hardware also aims to strengthen national security and boost local manufacturing.
Thomson’s Laptop Strategy
Avneet Singh Marwah, the CEO of Super Plastronics (SPPL), Thomson’s official brand licensee and manufacturing partner in India, explained their laptop plans.
Marwah mentioned that Thomson is responding to the growing number of laptop brands entering the smart TV market. The company aims to cater to a wide range of customers, from beginners to those looking for high-end laptops.
