Apple’s next-generation Ultra Smartwatch is set to offer cutting-edge features, including satellite connectivity and blood pressure monitoring, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. These advancements are expected to launch with the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra (possibly the Ultra 3).
Satellite Connectivity Coming to Apple Watch Ultra
According to Gurman, Apple is working on adding satellite connectivity to the 2025 Apple Watch Ultra, allowing users to send text messages via Globalstar’s satellite network when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Initially limited to emergency messages, the feature has been expanded in iOS 18 to allow sending texts to anyone, even in remote locations.
Aimed at adventurers, this addition will enhance safety in off-grid areas where cellular service is unavailable. While satellite connectivity is currently free for iPhones for two years, it remains unclear if Apple will charge for this service on the Apple Watch Ultra.
Apple Watch to Switch to MediaTek Modems
In addition to satellite connectivity, Apple is planning an important change in the Apple Watch’s internal components. Gurman states that Apple will transition from Intel’s cellular modems to versions developed by MediaTek in some models.
This move marks the first use of MediaTek technology in Apple devices, following years of evaluation. While Apple is also developing its own modem for the iPhone, this component is not yet intended for the Apple Watch.
Blood Pressure Monitoring Coming to Apple Watch
In addition, Gurman reports that Apple is working on introducing blood pressure monitoring for the Apple Watch, possibly by 2025. The feature will track blood pressure trends and alert users to potential hypertension, though it won’t provide precise measurements. Early detection could be crucial in preventing heart disease and stroke.
This feature is expected on the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and may also be included in the regular Apple Watch. While the technology is still being perfected after previous delays, Apple is also working on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, though it is not yet ready for release.
Apple’s Strategy to Boost Smartwatch Sales
With these new health features, Apple aims to boost sales in its Wearables, Home, and Accessories business, which has seen a decline in revenue over the past two years.
Gurman points out that these innovations could help reinvigorate interest in the Apple Watch, especially after a period of slow growth, giving consumers more reasons to upgrade.
