Google Family Link update brings improved parental supervision tools

Google has announced new supervision tools within Google Family Link to help parents manage their children’s device usage more effectively.

Redesigned Family Link Experience

Google has redesigned Family Link to enhance usability for parents overseeing their children’s devices. The updated Screen Time tab consolidates all screen-time controls in one place, allowing parents to monitor app and device usage, set time limits, and easily adjust Downtime and School Time settings.

The new Controls tab streamlines account and privacy management. Parents can quickly access key settings, approve app downloads, and block specific websites. These improvements ensure that parents have essential tools at their fingertips to manage their children’s digital experiences efficiently.

Managing multiple children’s devices is now more seamless. Parents can swipe between child profiles and control devices from a single page, with advanced settings just a tap away.

Expanded School Time Feature on Android Devices

Google is extending the School Time feature to more devices, including the Fitbit ACE LTE and Samsung Galaxy Watch for Kids.

This tool helps minimize distractions during school hours by limiting phone functionality and silencing notifications. Parents can schedule breaks for vacations, lunch, or recess while keeping specific educational apps accessible.

Recognizing that some apps support learning, Google allows parents to create a curated list of approved apps that children can use during School Time or other restricted modes.

New Parent-Managed Contacts Feature

With the recent enhancements to the Galaxy Watch for Kids, Google is expanding parent-managed contacts to Android phones.

Soon, parents will be able to approve contacts their children can call or text directly from Family Link. Children can also request new contacts, which parents must approve before they are added.
