Google Play gets improved widget search, badges and more

Google Play is changing how users find apps with widgets, adding tools to simplify discovery, the company announced. These updates aim to connect users with apps more easily.

Yinka Taiwo-Peters, Product Manager at Google, said, “You’ve asked for better ways for users to find and utilize your widgets, and we’re delivering.” The changes will “drive engagement with your app,” she added.

Here’s what’s new:
  • Dedicated Widgets Search Filter: A special filter on Google Play lets users search directly for apps with widgets. This makes apps stand out, possibly boosting downloads and interaction.
  • New Widget Badges on App Detail Pages: A visual badge now shows if an app has widgets. This clears up confusion and nudges users to try widget features.
  • Curated Widgets Editorial Page: A new page will showcase top widgets and their apps. By highlighting widget value, it increases visibility for apps that use them.

Taiwo-Peters explained, “We understand that the effort required to build and maintain widgets needs to be justified by user adoption.”

Benefits:
  • Increased User Engagement: Easier discovery could mean more users trying widgets, lifting app use and retention.
  • New Opportunities for Interaction: Widgets offer a fresh way to add value on home screens, strengthening user ties.
  • Renewed Investment Justification: Better visibility makes widget development more rewarding.

Taiwo-Peters encouraged a rethink of app strategies: “Google Play is making it easier than ever for users to find and love your widgets.” She views this as a chance to improve Android app experiences.

The company said these updates will roll out soon to Google Play on Android phones, tablets, and foldables.
