Lenovo plans to launch sub-Rs.5000 smartphones in India

Lenovo has plans to launch devices priced below Rs 5,000 to India, according to a recent report from The Hindu Business Line. The report also says that Lenovo aims to sell 1 million smartphones in India this year. Lenovo entered into the smartphone market in India last year with launch of 5 Android smartphones priced between Rs. 6499 and Rs. 28499. The company launched range of smartphones, A390, A706, S820, P780, S920 and K900 last week priced between Rs. 8689 and Rs. 32999. The reason behind this new move is their shrinking PC business.

Panasonic launched the company’s first Android smartphone P51 in India last month. At the launch the company said that they would launch 8 Android smartphones priced between Rs. 6,990 and Rs. 35,000 in India in coming months. The also revealed that they aim to capture 8% market share in the smartphone category in India.

At the launch event last week Lenovo revealed that the company became one of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers by market share in the year 2012, reached number 2 position in smartphones in China with 14.7% market share in 2 years and the smartphone sales grew more than 600% Y-o-Y, making Lenovo #5 worldwide for Q4 2012.

Hope we will see more affordable smartphones from the company soon. They have a tough competition with Indian companies like Micromax, Karbonn and Lava those releases lot of budget smartphones every month. Even Samsung launched the Galaxy Star Duos recently, which is the company’s cheapest Android smartphone till date.
