YouTube for Android gets updated to version 5.0 with In-App Multitasking, new UI

Google has begun a staged roll out of the long awaited update to its YouTube app for Android. The update brings along a major redesign to the application and brings a lot of feature additions as well.

Some of the major improvements include the updated card based interface. There’s in app multitasking that lets  you turn any video that you might be watching into a small window while you navigate the rest of the app. No, this does not work across Android which is a shame to say the least. A simple upward drag of the window brings up the player screen. We’re particularly impressed by the transitions  and the app was silky smooth through and through on our test HTC One device here. There are a lot of subtle additions and changes all around and some of the more noticeable ones include shifting the HD and CC buttons into their own menu. You no longer have to switch to landscape mode to toggle HD playback. The application also follows the global rotation settings. The app version is 5.0.21 and will be available on your device via the Play Store over the next few days. Do let us know if you spot any additional features.
