Recently, Oppo had teased about the 2K display on its upcoming Find 7 smartphone, but if we remember right, months ago, there was a Chinese player teasing a 2K display on its device similarly. That seems to have come true today, with the announcement of the world’s first 2K display smartphone – the Vivo XPlay 3S. 2560×1400 is the resolution that the massive 6 inch display packs, with a PPI of 490. It’s been well known that the human eye cannot distinguish pixels at more than 330 ppi, but it seems that companies will just keep on increasing the display resolutions here. The trend has been set for others to follow next year, as we are already hearing bigwigs like Samsung looking at 2K already. This smartphone will of course be available only in China when it launches in retail. Here’s a video of the phone and its OS for starters, specifications after the break.

In addition to the 2K display, the phone also comes with not one, but two dedicated audio amplifier chips inside, namely the ESS Technology’s ES9018 DAC and the Texas Instruments’ OPA2604, which along with the phone’s DTS software effects should make it sound really good with earphones. As you can see above, the specs look modern enough for a smartphone launched at this time, and is clearly intended to be a flagship. The camera, which is a 13 MP unit with a f1.8 lens seems to be the same as the Lenovo K900, a phone we reviewed sometime back, but it could be something else too, because it seems to have a lot of features. The OS, which is actually based on Android, called Vivo Funtouch, has the usual boatload of features like Gestures, a timeline and a lot lot more. This is in line with what we have seen in other smartphones from China which usually innovate on the software front even more than Samsung. Of course “innovate” is subjective, but still we are seeing more and more features from these phones. Anyway, the Xplay 3S seems like the first 2K flagship and that will make a name for itself, at least in China. We still wait to see if 2K brings something different or new, because 1080p displays are super dense already, and moving to 2K for a visual difference might be just for namesake. The onslaught has begun and it is time for manufacturers to do something new on the display front, like perhaps flexible ones that don’t break(oh wait).
