Sony Ericsson W350

Not much about this handset was revealed by Sony Ericsson at the launch, although at first glance, this handset is one helluva good looking mobile phone!

All we know for now are the dimensions: 104 x 43 x 10.5 mm and the weight is the modest 80g.

sony_ericsson_w350_closed.jpg

The handset features 1.9″ display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels, capable of showing up to 262K colors.

With this handset it is certain that folks at Sony Ericsson are trying to revive the uncommon flip-down form factor. Personally I think the flip down look is sleek and prevents unwanted flicking of buttons on the keypad by all and sundry. Continue reading “Sony Ericsson W350”

Home Automation: Control it through your mobile

iPhone_Lagotek.jpg

We have been hearing and reading of “intelligent” homes where you can control everything with the click of a button. Turn on the geyser at the stipulated hour and turn it off too; a system that ensures your coffee brews by itself and the curtains in your bedroom draw automatically at dusk; lights turn on when you walk into the bathroom and the flush is activated when you get off the seat.

Unimaginable? Unbelievable? But wait…there is more!

All these systems can be controlled through the internet; so whether you are at work or out of town, you can log into your home and check if the LPG valve in your kitchen is turned off; or activate your intrusion alarm system to keep burglars away. A handset for the fairer sex Not pretty PINK please!

“Pink it´s my new obsession
Pink it´s not even a question
Pink on the lips of your lover, ´cause
Pink is the love you discover…..

Pink it´s the colour of passion
`Cause today it just goes with the fashion
Pink it was love at first sight, yea
Pink when I turn out the light, and
Pink gets me high as a kite…”

So sang Aerosmith in their hit single PINK.

I sort of agree that Pink is the colour of passion and that it goes with the fashion. But the representation of pink as a “feminine” colour has been done to death especially by Mobile manufacturers.

Nokia_pink.jpg

What I can’t seem to understand is why Mobile manufacturers across the spectrum, from Nokia to Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG believe that Pink must be the colour of every woman or girls’ fancy. Because every time a phone “exclusively” for women is launched, it is in the customary PINK colour.

Mobile Hazard – Keep it away from your bedside, it may be interfering with your sleep!

If you use your handset like an alarm clock, here’s warning that you must stop doing it.

A recent study conducted in Sweden, where 36 women and 35 men were subjected to a laboratory experiment were exposed to 884 MHz GSM radiation or placebo shows that your handset may be interfering with your sleep pattern/cycle and even altering it.

hazard_for_humans.jpg

Twenty-two women and sixteen men reported symptoms they specifically related to mobile phone use. The radiation exposed subjects reported a delay to reach the first cycle of deep sleep, and further, the amount of sleep was also decreased. They also reported to have more headaches.

The study indicated that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals, components of sleep, believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear, are adversely affected. Continue reading “Mobile Hazard – Keep it away from your bedside, it may be interfering with your sleep!”

A mobile phone using village that does not have electricity!

While the rise in mobile phones users has been making waves, I recently came across this story which brought to light the extent to which mobile phone users in India will go to own one and subsequently charge one.

According to this story by a leading New Channel, villagers in Karaj in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, walk 20 kilometers everyday to get their mobile phones charged.

india_1.gif

They however have no qualms doing it, since this village has no electricity and no decent roads. Earlier this lack of basic development used to cause many people to get sick during the monsoons. Mobile phones have given the people in this powerless village entertainment and power to connect with their family and close friends.

Isn’t this a shame for the Indian Government…that in this day and age, a country that is touted to be a superpower in the next two decades still has un-electrified villages?

Technology has managed its penetration, wonder when basic infrastructure will find its way through India’s heart that lay in its villages….

A Comedy serial on your handset

Not content with giving us all round entertainment through the big 70mm screen or the small ‘television’ screen, filmmakers are now readying to give us entertainment through our handset screens.

The first company to launch a comedy serial for mobile phones is Rajshri Productions, the banner that gave us path-breaking films like “Maine Pyaar Kiya” and “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”.

A 90-episode series meant for mobile phones will be launched by the end of January 2008, and each episode will be of approximately three minutes duration.

Rajshri Media, an arm of Rajshri Productions was launched last year, and specializes in producing content for new media, including the Internet, mobile phones, and iPods.
