Aakash 2 project completed, 1 Lakh units delivered to Government

Datawind, the company behind the low-cost Aakash tablets has announced that they have completed the Aakash 2 project by supplying 100,000 Aakash low-cost computing devices for IIT-Bombay (under the Indian Government’s Ministry of Human Resources Development’s National Mission for Education through Information Communication Technology). DataWind won the international tender to supply Aakash 1 devices at a cost of $49.98. It was modified to 98,000 Aakash2 devices and 2,000 devices with DataWind’s recommendations for Aakash3 at a cost of Rs.2,263 (~$41.61). The dream project of the Indian government and a poster child for bringing affordable computing to the masses, the Aakash tablet has been under the media spotlight for reasons good and bad.

The first incarnation of the tablet was an unmitigated disaster but instead of giving up, Datawind has gone back to the drawing board to come up with a brand new product with renewed internals. Aakash 2 low-cost Tablet launched, UbiSlate 7Ci goes on sale

Aakash 2 ultra low-cost tablet, successor of Aaksash tablet was launched by the President of India , Pranab Mukherjee and the Human Resources & Development (HRD) Minister, MM Pallam Raju. It comes at a price tag of Rs. 1,130 for students, while the commercial version, UbiSlate 7Ci is available for purchase at Rs. 4,499. DataWind would supply 100,000 units of Aakash 2 to IIT Bombay and also aims to distribute them to Engineering colleges and universities. It comes with upgraded specifications including a 7-inch (800 x 480 pixels) capacitive touch screen display and runs on Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor and has 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal memory, 32GB expandable memory and a front-facing camera.
